Teaching College Students in China
I have been teaching at Hebei University in Baoding, China since September 2016. Please check out some of my teaching experiences!

Teaching Presentation
For this assignment, students were put into groups of 5 or 6 people. Each group was given a topic, some of which included cooking, movies, news, friends and family, manners and etiquette, and Olympics. Each topic came with 20-25 vocabulary words that are less well-known, for example, some of the "movies" vocabulary words were, "heartwarming", "tear-jerker", "chick-flick", etc. Students had to work together to create and teach a 45-minute lesson to their classmates. Their lesson needed to include the vocabulary I gave them, as well as a vocabulary review and 2 speaking activities.

Attached is a demonstration lesson I taught to my students to show them some examples of what I was looking for in their presentations. You can also see a sample of some of the fun English speaking activities my students were able to participate in. This lesson had two objectives:

Travel Presentation
This was an assignment for public English students, whose English levels were elementary. My objectives were:
For this assignment, students had to choose a city they would like to travel to and give a 3-4 minute informative speech about that city. Attached is a rubric I created and a PPT created by one of my students to use as a visual aide during his speech.

Identity Presentation
This was an assignment for my first-year English Majors. These students would have every class together for the remainder of their college careers, but it was their first semester of college. I wanted to create a safe learning environment by helping students to learn more about and make connections to one another. My objectives were:
For this assignment students had to create a 7-10 minute presentation about themselves: background, family, likes/dislikes, personality, and goals for the future. Attached are the instructions and rubric to the assignment.

Pen Pal Letter Assignment:
For this lesson, I taught my students how to write letters. We talked about the differences between formal and informal letters, and then I taught them the format of an informal letter. I arranged my students to write to students my friend teaches in America. Students were very excited about this assignment. Attached is a PDF of the PPT of my lesson, one of my student's letters as a sample, and a sample return letter from America. My objectives for this lesson were:

Day 1: I began by teaching students the basic elements of poetry - rhythm, sound, imagery and form. I taught students how to measure rhythm in meters per line, and we practiced looking for iambic and anapestic pentameter by snapping and clapping along to poems.
Day 2: I taught students sound devices - such as rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and repetition. I also taught students figures of speech, such as similes, metaphors, and personification. I took students outside to record observations using their five senses. Then students wrote a "snapshot" of their time outside, including the sound devices and figures of speech they had just learned. Day 3: I taught students how to analyze a poem, looking at sound, language, tone, mood, and imagery. Then, as a class, we analyzed the poem, "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes. Students discovered the theme, and made connections to the poem, drawing a picture to represent the imagery it left them with. Day 4: I taught students about different types of poems with very specific forms - Acrostic, Cinquain and Biopoems. Students wrote their own of each. Students also learned about Free Verse poetry and practiced writing their own, following the models of "Fog" by Carl Sandburg and "This is Just to Say" by William Carlos Williams. Finally, I allowed students to experiment with creating their own redacted poetry, using newspaper articles and book pages. |
Day 5: I taught students rhythmic and rhyming forms of poetry such as couplets, quatrains, limericks and sonnets. We wrote poems together as a class and students practiced writing their own rhyming poems. |
