Conceptual Money Lesson Plan: I taught a math lesson that went hand in hand with the children's book "The Penny Pot". The book is about Jessie, who wants to get her face painted for 50 cents, but does not have enough money. She collects other's leftover money in a penny pot until she saves up enough to get her face painted. As each person came to get their face painted, I had students use coins to show the amount of money that each person in the story had. Students were asked to show these amount in more than one way, and using the least amount of coins. At the end of the book, students had to use their problem solving skills, and whatever strategies they would like, to figure out if Jessie finally had enough money to get her face painted. I believe that incorporating literature into every subject is extremely important, In math, literature can help students to develop a more conceptual understanding of the content and apply it to their lives. I plan to use literature in mathematics any chance I get. |
